Abstract

Predicated on study and ethnographic research conducted in New York, this paper shows the way the discrepancy between Korean immigrant women’s increased economic role and determination of these husbands’ old-fashioned patriarchal ideology causes marital disputes and tensions. The vast majority of Korean immigrant wives work outside the home, most working long hours while only a small proportion of married women participate in the labor force in South Korea. Parallel towards the escalation in Korean ladies’ financial part, their husbands’ provider part and status that is social dramatically weakened with immigration. Despite Korean ladies’ upsurge in their role that is economic Korean husbands haven’t modified a rigid kind of patriarchal ideology brought from Korea because they’re socially segregated through the conventional society. a huge clash between Korean ladies’ active financial part and their husbands’ conventional patriarchal attitudes causes serious marital disputes in lots of Korean immigrant families. In addition, Korean partners’ (specially husbands’) frustrations over their downward social flexibility, the very long hours invested together into the household shop, and their midlife crisis are extra factors behind marital disputes.
