Its symptoms, in particular intense craving, may be a critical factor leading to relapse to amphetamine use. In clinical practice, medications for cocaine withdrawal are commonly used to manage amphetamine withdrawal although the pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic properties of these two illicit substances are different. Clinical services and policies need to take into account the poor mental health of people who use amphetamines.

Amphetamine Addiction: Uses, Side Effects, and Treatment

The most consistent positive findings have been demonstrated with stimulant agonist treatment (dexamphetamine and methylphenidate), naltrexone and topiramate. Less consistent benefits have been shown with bupropion, the glutamatergic agent, riluzole, and antidepressant mirtazapine, whilst in general, antidepressant medications (e.g. SSRIs, TCAs) have not been effective in reducing AMPH/MA use. The titles and abstracts of the studies identified by the search strategy were evaluated by two reviewers (KS and LA) independently. Divergent selection of publications was discussed among the investigators until a consensus was obtained, and if required a third reviewer (NE) resolved disputes. Data were managed in Covidence [23] up to the point of data extraction; due to the large variation in outcome measures, data extraction was completed on identical spreadsheets by the two reviewers and compared for consistency.

How should I take amphetamines?

Therefore, optimising therapeutic efficacy whilst simultaneously maintaining side effects at an acceptable level is a difficult balance requiring careful dose titration in the patient. Four studies, involving 125 participants, met the amphetamine addiction inclusion criteria for this review (seeCharacteristics of included studies). In total, 59 participants received treatment for amphetamine withdrawal (37 amineptine, 22 mirtazapine) compared to 66 participants who received placebo.

6. Depression

Much of these stocks got into the ‘black market’, and in the 1950s d-amphetamine abuse became recognised. In a classic study of that period, Connell from the Institute of Psychiatry reported a group of heavy d-amphetamine users who had become paranoid (Connell, 1966). This flagged up the potential psychiatric dangers of this drug and may have encouraged prescribers away from d-amphetamine and on to methylphenidate. Another factor was the use of d-amphetamine as an antidepressant in the 1950s before the discovery of the tricyclic monoamine reuptake inhibitors.

People struggling with addiction usually deny they have a problem and hesitate to seek treatment.

These two processes lead to both alpha and beta-adrenergic receptor stimulation, causing sympathomimetic symptoms (hypertension, tachycardia, hyperthermia, vasoconstriction, and diaphoresis).

Two groups of synthetic drugs — synthetic cannabinoids and substituted or synthetic cathinones — are illegal in most states.

In the USA, d-amphetamine-containing medications, especially MES-amphetamine, have been very widely used as treatments for ADHD.

Studies relying on pill count or self-report lacked critical appraisal of the results.

Among chronic users of amphetamines, evidence is accruing to describe the range of public health problems attributable to sustained heavy use of the drug.

Providers may also use amphetamines to treat obesity, though this is less common.

Although there was a substantially elevated risk of suicide amongst people who used amphetamines, the quality of evidence was poor, and there was no evidence available from longitudinal studies to understand whether the use of amphetamines either coincided with or preceded suicidality. Moreover, the size of the association was small after adjustment for other substance use, demographics and premorbid risk. High quality population-level studies are needed to https://ecosoberhouse.com/ more accurately quantify this risk. Clinical responses to methamphetamine use need to address mental health harms. Topiramate was assessed in two studies reviewed here [32, 55], demonstrating reduced use and addiction severity compared with placebo. Furthermore, a secondary analysis of Elkashef et al. [32] found higher responders within groups in a latent class analysis [69], suggesting further studies with different eligibility criteria are warranted.

Forty-two percent of individuals who had used MA in the prior 12 months also reported being diagnosed or treated for a concurrent mental illness—three times as high as the non-illicit drug-using population [80]. Among MA users, the majority report a lifetime prevalence of depression and anxiety [81]. The exclusion of relatively common comorbidities such as polydrug dependence and mental health comorbidities limits the generalisability of many of the studies. For example, the role of antipsychotic and antidepressant medications may differ in patients presenting with psychosis or depression. Similarly, dependence to other substances such as alcohol, benzodiazepines or opioids is also likely to impact upon the safety and efficacy and choice of medications.

Implications of the available evidence

To avoid withdrawal symptoms, take your medication exactly as your provider prescribed it to you.

Withdrawal happens when it leaves your body and the intoxication effects wear off.

D, Supported by evidence from cross-sectional studies, representative population-based, or case-control studies.

People may also use the drugs in an unprescribed manner, such as to stay awake for a study deadline or to suppress appetite.

This is due in large part to fear of losing access to children (e.g. due to mandatory reporting), and family responsibilities (lack of alternate options for childcare, etc.); women are also more likely to encounter economic barriers to treatment access than are men [76]. A single, recent American study assessed varenicline (1 mg po BD) as a pharmacotherapy for MA dependence [27]. There were no differences between treatment and placebo arms for any measures of dependence; however, there was a reduction in cigarettes smoked in the treatment arm (consistent with its licensed indication as a smoking cessation medication). One priority for clinicians and researchers alike has been to establish an effective pharmacotherapy for SUD.

The AUC0-infinity shows that the overall drug exposure was identical irrespective of the route of administration.

Sensitivity analyses are used to assess how robust the results are to uncertain decisions or assumptions about the data and the methods that were used.

Misusing amphetamines, or taking them in a different way than a doctor prescribes, can lead to amphetamine addiction.

A person should only take medication that a doctor prescribes for them and should store their medications safely.

Development of one or more medications for amphetamine withdrawal, particularly if implemented with evidence‐based behavioral or counselling interventions, would have great public health significance. Maintaining a review of outcomes from experiences using medications in clinical trials for amphetamine withdrawal is an important method for clinicians to stay current and to seek guidance regarding medication strategies when treating individuals in acute withdrawal from amphetamines. A study of atomoxetine (80 mg po OD), a selective norepinephrine (noradrenaline) reuptake inhibitor (SNRI), randomised 69 opioid and ATS-dependent participants to 16 weeks of treatment, assessing ATS use as the primary outcome [58].

Abuse liability

JF was a paid expert witness in a New Zealand Court of Appeal matter addressing sentencing frameworks for people convicted of methamphetamine-related offending. He is an unpaid trustee of Odyssey House Christchurch, a non-governmental non-profit organisation which provides treatment for offenders with addiction problems. While some studies define success by abstinence from AMPH/MA, others consider a reduction in use to be a measure of treatment success. Abstinence as an outcome can be determined by self-report, or by negative UDS at time points pre-determined (see Table 5).

Effects of Amphetamine Addiction on the Body

People who habitually use amphetamines rapidly develop tolerance as part of dependence. The amount ultimately used may be more than several times the original dose. Most people using very high doses over several days or weeks become confused and psychotic because amphetamines can cause severe anxiety, paranoia, and a distorted sense of reality.

Few studies examined treatments for amphetamine withdrawal, although it is a common problem among amphetamine users.
